Day 2 – Wilmington Carriage Tour – Wilmington Riverwalk – Bellamy Mansion Museum – Battleship North Carolina – Cape Fear Riverboat Sunset Cruise
This morning, tour downtown Wilmington on a Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour. Explore the 230-plus-block National Register Historic District at the pace of days gone by during a horse-drawn carriage tour with Springbrook Farms. The rescued Percheron draft horses and a costumed carriage guide will lead you on a narrated journey highlighting downtown Wilmington’s history, as well as the famous personalities who have called the city home.
Then enjoy free time for lunch on own at the Wilmington Riverwalk. Stroll along nearly two-miles of scenic walkway alongside the historic Cape Fear River. Stretching from Nunn Street to the Isabella Holmes Bridge, lined with an assortment of markets, unique boutiques and art galleries, the Riverwalk is home to quaint shops, and outdoor cafes.
Next, tour the Bellamy Mansion Museum and explore one of North Carolina’s most spectacular examples of early 1800s architecture. This exquisitely restored 10,000-square-foot house and recreated grounds boasts one of the few preserved urban slave quarters in the country. The mansion does not boast a pure architectural style, but shares elements of Greek Revival, Neoclassical and Italianate styles.
The afternoon includes a visit to Battleship North Carolina, an authentically restored World War II battleship, and National Historic Landmark. Wilmington was the first city in the country to receive the designation of “American World War II Heritage City.” Explore the decks of the World War II-era Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, and experience how the sailors lived aboard the ship during wartime. Walk along the half-mile SECU Memorial Walkway that honors veterans from all branches of the military.
This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant followed by a Sunset Cruise on the Cape Fear Riverboat. On this Wilmington sunset cruise, you will see spectacular views of downtown, the port, and river wildlife, plus visit the working port where ships from around the world are coming and going all the time.
